A medical team at Dallah Al-Nakheel Children’s Hospital in Riyadh has successfully performed a delicate and rare surgery on a one-year-old child using the latest thoracoscopic techniques, without the need for any traditional open surgical incision.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The child was admitted to Dallah Al-Nakheel Hospital suffering from recurrent chest infections and persistent shortness of breath. Following the necessary medical examinations and imaging, doctors discovered a hernia with laxity of the diaphragm on the right side, which caused a large portion of the liver to move up into the right chest cavity. This, in turn, led to compression of the right lung and displacement of the heart from its normal position—an uncommon and complex condition in pediatric medicine.
The medical team was able to perform the procedure using thoracoscopy through small surgical incisions. The liver was returned to its normal position in the abdomen, while ensuring that the lung regained its normal size and the heart stabilized in its correct position, all without any open surgical intervention.
After the operation, the child was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit for close monitoring, before being discharged from the hospital a few days later in excellent health.
Dr. Ahmed Khairy, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon at Dallah Al-Nakheel Hospital, explained that this case is considered rare and requires highly precise surgical intervention. He emphasized that the use of thoracoscopic techniques in such complex pediatric surgeries represents a significant advancement, often eliminating the need for traditional open surgery, which may carry additional risks and complications.
He also praised the cooperation with the anesthesia team led by Dr. Sherif Al-Aqdah, Head of the Anesthesia Department, and Dr. Sarhan, Consultant Anesthesiologist, noting that integrated teamwork among medical teams was a key factor in the success of this advanced procedure.
